APPI Policy Futures works at the interface of policy, evidence and practice to drive new opportunities for capability-building and capacity uplift for established and emerging policy experts. These practitioner-centred programs aim to enhance skills and knowledge exchange around best practice in contemporary policymaking.
Establishing Policy Futures is an important next step in meeting the Institute’s ambitious vision to transform public policy in Australia. Responding to the needs of government and university partners, this new program presents a compelling opportunity for us to build the targeted policy capacity and capabilities that can deliver real benefits for society at large.

Evidence to Policy Masterclasses
Our Masterclasses are designed for both government and university colleagues. For researchers and university professional staff, ‘Engaging with and Influencing Government’ aims to develop a deeper understanding of policymaking and the proficiency to engage in policy processes, thereby maximising research impact. For government colleagues, these Masterclasses address timely issues relevant to policy teams. From how the state and federal budgets impact their policy portfolio, to key considerations in government such as AI and Automated Decision-making, these build skills and knowledge in areas that government policy teams increasingly face.
Policy Capability Clinics
APPI’s Capability Clinics offer multi-week, in-person workshops for capability development. Grounded in live issues to ensure practical, hands-on upskilling, they can be delivered on a timely, real-world policy or research translation output. These clinics are delivered by experts and practitioners who bring a depth of practical experience and cross-sectoral perspectives.
