The James Martin Institute (JMI) has launched its annual Policy Challenge Grant round aimed at addressing some of New South Wales’s biggest policy challenges. Through extensive discussions and consultations with stakeholders, this year’s thematic focus surrounds intergenerational equity across five key areas of public policy. The 2024 application round is open from 7 March – 19 April 2024.
Launched in 2022 the Policy Challenge Grants are a prestigious annual award to support applied public policy research for the public good. To date, the program has supported 53 researchers across 13 projects on a wide range of pressing policy areas, from domestic violence to disaster management, and First Nations people in the transition to Net Zero to STEM education in the regions. This includes the first grant project to be completed on facial recognition and the NSW Digital ID.
Grants will be awarded to outstanding academics undertaking applied policy research, or translating existing research for a policy audience. Unique in Australia, the program’s “grant+” model provides policy engagement support to researchers throughout the project cycle.
The program is open to researchers from JMI’s six partner universities: the University of Sydney, Western Sydney University the University of Technology Sydney, the University of New South Wales, Charles Sturt University, and the University of Wollongong.
Successful projects will generate new insights, foster engagement between academics, policymakers and other stakeholders, including local communities, and support improved policy outcomes.
