Peter Shergold AC completed his term as Chair of the JMI Board of Directors in March 2025. Under his leadership, the Institute has established itself as a trusted partner of government and universities. His strategic vision has been crucial in driving the Institute’s expansion and enhancing its impact on major government priorities.

Combining deep expertise in both public service and academic roles, Professor Shergold has served as the nation’s most senior public servant, as Secretary of the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet, and as Chancellor of Western Sydney University for over a decade. He was appointed the Independent Chair of the Australian Research Council in 2024 and serves as Vice President of the Royal Society of NSW.

“I have been proud to serve as Chair of the James Martin Institute for Public Policy at a critical time of growth and development,” Peter Shergold said. “After many decades of searching, I found my intellectual home in JMI. This unique, groundbreaking model ensures that expertise can better inform government policy. Like me, the Institute’s coalition of partners are committed to evidence-based public policy, which is more important than ever to stand behind,” he added.

Jillian Kilby, who currently serves as an independent Director, has been appointed to act as Interim Chair and a search process has begun for the next Chair. “We are all deeply grateful for Peter’s exemplary oversight of JMI over the past three years, and to have benefited from his indefatigable commitment to public service. I am delighted to be appointed Interim Chair of JMI as we start the next chapter in our upward trajectory,” noted Jillian Kilby. “2025 looks to be an exciting and dynamic year for the Institute, and I look forward to building on Peter’s trajectory in advancing JMI’s influence and reach.”

“Peter has been an inspirational, supportive and deeply pragmatic Chair since the Institute’s early establishment,” said Libby Hackett, CEO of JMI. “He has made an enduring impact in shaping the Institute that will continue to be felt for years to come.”
